In explaining his choice, Levin spoke of the power that the federal government has amassed and of the constitution that is virtually ignored.
“Today, things are completely out of control. Today the constitution, if it’s even acknowledged, it’s acknowledged in the breach. We live in a post-constitutional period for the most part. It is the constitution that is supposed to organize this government in a way that ensures that our liberty is ordered, but that our liberty is secured. You see, it’s not government first and country second. It’s country first and government second, but we seem to have forgotten that.
One of the reasons I have spent so many years now railing against … exposing the entrenched republicans is because they have no connection anymore to what took place in Philadelphia (Constitutional Convention). They’ve no connection anymore to Abraham Lincoln. They don’t even have any connection to Ronald Reagan today. They are perfectly happy to go along with whatever it is taking place in this country, the direction that we’re going in this country, as long as they have a piece of the action. As long as they have some power.”
Levin explains that the road back to restoring the constitution as initially intended will be a long one. There is one candidate he believes will take us down that path.
